Do you like Typography? Music? Rootbeer? Free Stuff? Join MCAD design students as they present the first Pivot event.
Hosting the evening will be Bernard Canniffe, MCAD's new Design Chair. Bernard will be sharing some thoughts as he takes us through design and movies.
And because this is an intercollegiate event, there has to be some competition involved. Bring your typography knowledge and prepare to work together in teams to win the trivia prize. And be prepared to work with students who are NOT from your school! Time to mix things up!
There will also be time for socializing with DJ's for your music pleasure, food for your hunger, and rootbeer for your thirst.
Attention all BFA, MFA AND BS students graduating in May!!
There will be a meeting on Tuesday, March 16th, from 12-1 in Aud 150.
At this meeting we will discuss the plan for commencement (date, time, rehearsal, speakers, tickets, etc). This is info that you and your friends/families will want to know. We will also talk about the BFA exhibit, exit surveys and the VanDerlip Award competition.

With spring in the air, I wanted to reach out to you and let you know about MCAD's plans for Jay Coogan's inauguration as President, which will take place at the College on Saturday April 17. Megan Leafblad will be communicating more specific details as we get closer to the event, but I hope that each of you will join us for this day of celebration. And yes, plans include free food for students!
I've met a few of you who attended Arts Advocacy Day last week, and look forward to getting to know more of you in the weeks and months ahead. I started at MCAD last January as Vice President of Institutional Advancement and hope to expand MCAD's visibility and contributed support.
The inauguration events on April 17 provide a great chance to showcase the College's accomplished faculty, talented students, and significant impact on the community. The day's programs are designed to help generate visibility for the college and its future, and to engage some of the major benefactors whose support will be critical to our plans.
The theme for the Inauguration is The Next Now, and the schedule of events is as follows:
Saturday, April 17, 2010
11:30 Brunch for Trustees and donors in the College Center
1:00 Optional tours of MCAD facilities: print studio, gallery, foundry
3:00 Inauguration ceremony in Auditorium 150, with a live video feed to the College Center
4:00 Public reception in the Gallery
5:00 Live music and celebration in College Center, featuring bands, VJ, and headliner Skoal Kodiak
We very much want the inauguration to include students in every way possible--we also want to showcase the energy and commitment of MCAD students to donors and alumni. Already, some students have been involved in helping Lars Mason to transform the decor of the College Center for the brunch. Other students will be asked to participate in the brunch or inauguration ceremony. We are hoping that ALL students will want to join us for the 4:00 reception, and will invite their friends to the evening celebration in the College Center.
We also have volunteer opportunities to help welcome and guide our guests throughout the day's activities. Please let me or Megan Leafblad know if you'd be able to volunteer your time on inauguration day.
Stay tuned for additional details in the next month. I look forward to celebrating with you on April 17!

Hello MCAD!
On *Thursday March 18th at approx. 2:00 p.m.* Public Safety will be conducting a Campus Emergency Notification Drill. This Drill will consist of two parts: a TEST message sent via the text messaging vendor the college has signed up with (e2campus.com/my/mcad), and an announcement over the campus phone system. Only those with phones that have speaker phone capability will be able to hear the announcement.
Thank you,
Public Safety
*Don't be left out of the loop!! Register Your cell phone with MCAD's Emergency Notification System Provider*
The Minneapolis College of Art & Design students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register their cell-phone/ and up to two e-mail addresses with the college's new Emergency Notification System provider, *e2campus*. For most users the cell-phone is the primary means of receiving a message; however, there are other options on how to deliver the message:
This system will only be used by the Public Safety department and only in the most extreme cases involving the safety of the MCAD community. It will also be used to announce /college closures/ due to weather related emergencies.
The system will send a text message to the primary device and e-mail addresses of all students, staff and faculty who choose to register their cell-phone information. This is voluntary and there is no cost to sign up for the e2campus system. Those who do not register a cell phone number will still receive emergency alerts via e-mail.
Depending on your cell-phone plan, you may be charged for the text message if a message is sent to your cell phone.
Those signing up their cell phone number for the Emergency Notification System will need to provide both their cell phone number and the provider of their cell phone service, such as Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint.
To register, first go to the www.e2campus.com/my/mcad. Click on the link "Click here to get started and sign up now".
Cell phone numbers collected for the Emergency Notification System are treated as confidential information and will not be released to others outside of the MCAD community.
If a student or employee receives an emergency message, it will show up on her or his cell phone as,
"FR: MCAD Public Safety."
When MCAD decides to send an emergency message via cell phones, the message first is sent to the various cell-phone providers. The providers, in turn, send the messages to the students and employees. Just how fast the messages are delivered could depend on factors that are beyond MCAD's control. Some text messages could be dropped due to high traffic load or if the message is perceived as being spam.
It is expected that the messages will be delivered quickly. But because of the variables involved with dealing with various providers and calling plans, MCAD will also send 'all campus' e-mail messages, use the phone intercom system (phones equipped with speaker phone in the academic buildings), and use hand held megaphone public-address speakers to alert the campus in an emergency situation.
Hey Everyone!
We dare you to try to enter the mind of this week's visiting artist, Ken Brown. We've got three books of his quirky cartoons and illustrations including My Parachute is Beige, The Unbearable Cuteness of Being, and Notes From the Nervous Breakdown Lane. They're now on display in the Library along with some of his wrapping paper designs & postcards (which you can buy at the Art Cellar).
