Introduction

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) has greatly benefited from the use of Open Source software. Among the many benefits, MCAD Technology recognizes that open source software:

• Allows the MCAD community to leverage technologies that would otherwise be inaccessible
• Allows the MCAD community to benefit from the large body of knowledge and expertise in the open source software community
• Protects MCAD’s investment in open source software (whether created or utilized)
• Protects the free exchange of ideas and promotes learning

Open Source Licensing

While MCAD will retain the copyright on software created by MCAD Technology employees (including both staff and student workers), employees are authorized and encouraged to license created software under an Open Source Initiative (OSI) approved license. MCAD Technology recognizes the issues caused by licenses proliferation and recommends the MIT License (a Permissive license) or the GPLv3 (a Copyleft or reciprocal license).
