Dear MCAD Community,
With the start of a new academic semester, we like to come together in community to meet new people, reunite with others, and get inspired. Please join our upcoming Community Conversation on Wednesday, September 27 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Auditorium 150.
Our featured speaker is MCAD Honorary Doctorate Recipient Sean Sherman who will share his unique experiences as a chef, mentor, and entrepreneur. A member of the Oglala Lakota tribe of South Dakota, Chef Sherman has been focused on the revitalization and evolution of Indigenous foods systems throughout North America for over 30 years, deepening his understanding of what is needed to showcase Native American cuisine in today's world.
Recognized nationally and internationally, Chef Sean’s innovative business endeavors have included The Sioux Chef, a catering and education resource in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area; Ta-tanka Truck, featuring 100% pre-contact foods of the Dakota and Minnesota territories; and O-wam-ni by The Sioux Chef, Minnesota’s first full-service Indigenous restaurant. He continues to educate and make healthy Indigenous foods more accessible through his non-profit organization North American Traditional Indigenous Foods Systems (NATIFS) and the Indigenous Food Lab in Minneapolis.
Chef Sean and team received the 2018 James Beard Award for Best American Cookbook, 2019 James Beard Leadership Award, and 2022 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. Sean was also named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2023.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
All my best,
Sanjit
