Event Title: Pathways to Design
Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2022 | 3–4pm ET | Free to attend - registration required

Join AICAD for a moderated panel of contributors from the new book The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Reflection & Expression (edited by Anne H. Berry, Kareem Collie, Penina Acayo Laker, Lesley-Ann Noel, Jennifer Rittner and Kelly Walters). In this discussion, co-editors Jennifer Rittner and Kelly Walters will moderate a discussion with designers Cey Adams, Fo Wilson, Terrayne Brown and Schessa Garbutt. Before young people are ever taught what design is or what the design professions are, they find it in their own lives. They make zines, collect postcards, redraw logos and cut out typography. In this panel, four artist-designers will share their early influences in art and design. We’ll ask, what might the K-12 environment do to help nurture more young people into design? How do we create more pathways to design, in particular, separate from fine art-centered classes? How do we navigate between different art and design spaces? How might finding our own paths actually have made us better, self-authoring, creative professionals?
