Notetakers FAQ

  • What are Notetakers?
    • Notetakers are students who take notes during their classes to help other students.

    • A notetaker is paid for their time spent in class taking notes, and up to 30 minutes outside of class spent scanning or typing their notes. The amount of time one takes notes can vary by class, lecture and content of the day. For studio classes, this can be 30 minutes or more per class, and for Liberal Arts classes, this can be up to three hours per class.

    • Notetaking is a casual labor job that pays $15.19 an hour.
      • Notetakers are NOT paid out of work-study funds so a student does not need work-study to be a Notetaker.

    • Notetakers are hired throughout the semester
      • Upon hire, notetakers, who have never worked at MCAD, will need to complete a federal I-9 with MCAD Human Resources.
        • It is good for students to familiarize themselves with the physical identification and documents needed to complete a federal I-9 as this is needed for them to start their job and be paid.

  • How do I know if my notes are good enough for another student?
    • We look for legible, cohesive notes that reflect the lecture and materials covered in class
      • Notes can be handwritten and scanned in, or typed

    • To help you, we ask for you to go through the National Deaf Center's Online Notetaker Training
      • The training is free and you will be paid $15.19 an hour for the time it takes you to take the training

  • How do I let the Learning Center and Accessibility Services know what classes I could be a notetaker in?
      • It is important to note that completing the steps lets us know what classes you are in that you are willing to take notes for. It does NOT guarantee a job.
        • If we have a need for a notetaker in one of the classes you are willing to take notes in then we may hire you for the class.

  • I have some questions and would like to talk with someone about being a notetaker, how would I do that?
    • If you have questions or would like to talk with someone about being a notetaker then please set up a Notetaker Meeting by signing into the Learning Center Appointments Page and selecting "Notetaker Meeting" from the "Limit To" menu.
