This lunchtime talk celebrates the 140th anniversary of the very first class offered on September 7, 1886 by the then-brand new Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, which today is our own Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Featuring historic photographs from the College Archives, this presentation shows what classes students took, what skills they were expected to develop, and what challenges they had to overcome in becoming artists. You’ll also meet some of the fascinating individuals who shaped the School’s identity during its first forty years, and see how the School adapted and changed to face crises that could have resulted in its demise.
