Lab Guidelines

The MCAD Computer Support Services staff recommends that users comply with the following guidelines when working in the MCAD computer labs:

Try not to open files directly from the servers or save files directly to the servers, including your network home directory! This dramatically increases the chance that your files will corrupt and sets up the possibility for a system and/or server crash. Always copy the files you need from the server to the Temp_Storage hard drive partition and then open/work with the local copies.

Don't forget to log out when you're done working in the labs (Apple Icon > Log Out)!!!

Class servers are cleaned off at the end of each semester. Make sure you always back up all of your important data files before leaving for break or the summer. Student Studio server shares are not erased or disabled until after graduation or withdrawal. However - you should still back up your important files from those servers on a regular basis.

The temp.mcad.edu server share is not secure as a primary storage medium! Files stored on this server are not backed up and any files over one week old are automatically deleted with no chance of recovery. Please use this temporary storage space with caution and remember to back up data on a removable storage medium.

Do not eat or drink in the labs! Please consume all food outside the labs.

The mounted lab speakers are intended for use by instructors and in-class presentations. When working in the computer labs outside of class, please respect the space of those around you and use headphones.

Always clean up after yourself when you're done working in the labs. Recycle unused printed paper, throw away any trash you've accumulated and make sure you've left the computer in the original working condition that you found it.

If you are unfamiliar with a procedure or need to report a computer problem, e-mail computer_support@mcad.edu, fill out the Help Request Form or visit the Help Desk (321) for assistance.

Keep Cintiq, scanning, rendering and digitizing stations available for users who require those special features.

MCAD is licensed to use the lab fonts for internal, educational use only. If you need to use MCAD fonts when printing at an off-campus service bureau, talk with your instructor for assistance.
