(Re)Encountered: Works from the MCAD Collection is a student-led exhibition of artworks from the MCAD Gallery Collection. Beginning in the 1960s through the late-2000s, MCAD collected artworks by alumni and faculty, as well as creating annual print exchanges featuring the work of MFA students. Although the college is no longer acquiring new works, what remains is a treasure trove of hidden gems that now serve as a teaching collection for students and a record of alumni work.

The students in the Fine Arts Studio course “Working with the Collection” this semester decided to take on the curation and research for this exhibition. The works selected cross many different media, but there is an overarching focus on the intersection of figuration and abstraction. For many of the current students, this theme is also prevalent in their own artworks. There is a shared sense that the love of painting, the joy of drawing, the influence of comics, and the landscape of Minnesota, continue to shape the work of MCADians.
