2024 MCBA Collegiate Fellowship Winner

Please join me in congratulating Malini Basu on being the 2024 recipient of the MCBA Collegiate Fellowship. This opportunity includes a $1000 stipend, an eight week summer studio residency at Minnesota Center for Book Arts, tuition for one MCBA class up to $300, amongst other benefits.

Malini will work on a collaborative project with her father, repurposing his 'Moving Day Parade' short story he wrote while an international student residing in the US, into an installation of prints with imagery and a transcribed text exchange between father and daugh ter relaying transitional life experiences to one another. Malini plans on making several unique prints to include collagraphs of cardboard boxes, trace monotype drawings, screenprints and laser cut/die cut lettering and imagery.

This year's fellowship was juried by India Johnson. India Johnson is a research-based artist working across craft, artist publishing, and social practice. India’s work associates textiles with formal practices for organizing information, highli ghting the meaning generated by compiling, collecting, organizing, indexing, annotating, juxtaposing, and describing existing information and material.

India’s work has been installed in churches, libraries, and laundromats throughout the Midwest, and exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2020, India received an MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. She is a founding member of LGBTQ Iowa Archives & amp; Library, and half of Late Night Copies Press. In 2023, India co-organized the Midwest Queer & Trans Zine Fest and organized 50 artists to participate in the Twin Cities Writer & Artist Services Directory.

Congratulations Malini!
