Campus Community

Dear Students,

It’s wonderful to be kicking off a new academic year! I have enjoyed meeting those of you who are new to MCAD, and greeting those who are returning.

One thing I love about MCAD is our remarkable campus community. Sustaining our supportive environment means that, among other things, we deal with challenges, conflicts, and concerns in ways that promote sharing, listening, growth, and respect.

Seeing posters going up around campus lately, I want to acknowledge the feelings and opinions being expressed on a range of topics. I also want to share some important reminders that will help us address them most constructively.

First, if you wish to put up a poster on campus, please take time to review the Bulletin Boards and Posting Policy in the Student Handbook (p. 28). This policy is not intended to silence ideas or concerns or to deter promotion of events or activities. It aims to follow official fire-prevention protocols and avoid damage to walls and property. I appreciate your consideration for the people (e.g., Facilities) who work hard every day to maintain our campus.

Second, please be aware that our Student Handbook (p.80) contains language prohibiting bullying and a hostile educational environment. Our Employee Handbook (p. 31) also addresses respect for individual community members. We do not tolerate bullying or harassment by any student, faculty, or staff member toward any other campus community member.

Third, MCAD has many avenues designed for voicing concerns, asking for help, and collaborating on solutions. As a starting point, you can meet with the Student Affairs office, faculty supervisors, or other staff; all are here to help you. You can reach out to your  representatives in the Student Union—a body that exists to enable students to participate in governance through discussion, collaboration, and communication. Lastly, feel free to stop by and talk with me during my weekly Open Office Hours (Tuesdays from noon to 1:00 p.m.). No appointment is necessary.

Thank you for doing your part in keeping MCAD the supportive community that it is.

Kind regards,
Gwen
