Important Campus Update, January 24, 8:55 p.m.

Posted at 8:55 p.m.

Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,

We appreciate your cooperation throughout today as we have been navigating the ever-changing, stressful aftermath of this morning’s fatal shooting near campus.

After reviewing the latest information, we have made the decision to lift MCAD’s shelter-in-place. That said, we encourage you to stay home if possible. There is currently a 36-block safety zone established by the Minnesota Guard to maintain Whittier area safety for residents, workers, and essential needs only.

We will send updates as needed. Thank you for your continued support of your fellow MCAD community members. We are proud of the care that everyone has shown throughout this terrible day.

Sincerely,

Gwen

Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,

As you know, our campus community is witnessing an ongoing, citywide response to a shooting incident that occurred this morning near campus. Our hearts go out to anyone who has been directly or indirectly affected by this tragic incident.

At this time we remain under a “shelter in place” order by our Campus Safety until the area is deemed safe and clear. All campus buildings remain locked and open to badge-access only (no visitors). We will provide food later this afternoon for students living on campus. A separate email will be sent to residents within the hour with instructions.

Week of January 26

For the safety of MCAD students, staff, and faculty, we are taking precautionary measures and cancelling classes Monday, January 26 through Friday, January 30.

  • All campus buildings will remain closed to the public.
  • Support services (i.e., Art Cellar, 3D Shop, Learning Center, Printshop, and Service Bureau) will have reduced operations. We will send a separate email outlining the reduced-service hours.
  • Any staff member who can work remotely should do so. Discuss with your supervisor.
  • The Cafe will be open as per their regular schedule.
  • Campus Safety escorts are available 24/7 within our boundaries.

Weeks of February 2 and February 9

From February 2–13 all classes will switch to remote learning. Your faculty will be in touch with students to further explain how the classes will be conducted.

I want to thank you all for adhering to Campus Safety alerts, and for your resilience, calm, and care for each other in this unfolding and very distressing situation.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Student AffairsHuman Resources, or Campus Safety.

All my best to you,
Gwen
