Know Your Rights and Roles Guidance

Dear MCAD Community,

With the recent, unsettling news about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence and actions at Augsburg University, we want to make sure you understand your rights and roles if something similar were to occur at MCAD.

No matter what the situation, your only responsibility is to remain calm, do not engage as you have the right to remain silent, and immediately notify Campus Safety so that appropriate procedures can be followed. Campus Safety may not send out an immediate, all-campus communication until after ICE has left campus.

  • If you witness ICE presence on our campus, notify Campus Safety immediately. As an administration, we are prepared to address the situation and respond.
  • While our outdoor spaces are private property (e.g., MCAD parking lots, sidewalks, and the lawn), these spaces are open to the public, including ICE.
  • Campus Safety is required by law to let ICE agents enter our buildings only if they present a judicial warrant signed by a judge and bearing a court seal. We have designated staff officials who are prepared to work with Campus Safety in response to ICE presence inside our buildings.
  • If at any time an agent attempts to ask you questions and/or presents an ICE notice of inspection or a subpoena, do not interact. You should not provide any personal information or answer questions about anyone else. Again, contact Campus Safety.

If you have any further questions, please review our most up-to-date ICE Policy or reach out to anyone in Campus Safety (campus_safety@mcad.edu or 612-874-3801). Most importantly, if you ever feel that your safety is in jeopardy for any reason, cal l 911.

Thank you for your cooperation and care for our MCAD community members.

Sincerely,
Pam Hoffmann
