Peer Mentors for 2025/2026

The Undergraduate Peer Mentor Program is currently looking for Undergraduate Peer Mentors for the 2025-2026 academic year. The purpose of the program and the qualifications of a mentor are listed below. Peer Mentor positions are paid positions, and mentors are hired for the entire 2025-2026 academic year.

APPLICATION TIMEFRAME

  • Applications are due by Wednesday, April 16th at 11:59 PM CST. Please feel free to email the Learning Center with any questions you have about the program.

PURPOSE OF THE PEER MENTOR PROGRAM

  • The purpose of the peer mentor program is to provide first-year undergraduate students with a mentor and a small cohort of fellow students to aid in the transition to MCAD.
  • Mentors provide new students with a pathway to success at MCAD through weekly emails, leading events, face-to-face and remote meetings, tips for academic success, updates on art & design activities in the greater Minneapolis area, and are go-to student experts at MCAD.

PEER MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Weekly communication with mentees via email, Canvas, and other means
  • Connecting mentees with MCAD resources, events, and information
  • Planning, promoting, and implementing social and educational events
  • Bi-weekly staff meetings
  • Attending a one-week Peer Mentor Training that leads up to Fall Orientation
  • Be an Orientation Leader during Fall and Spring Orientation
  • Attend a 3-hour virtual meeting in early August prior to Orientation Training
  • Be a representative of MCAD and present yourself in a manner that represents MCAD’s values

INTERESTED APPLICANTS MUST

  • Meet the qualifications listed below 
  • Complete the online application form
  • Supply the name of one MCAD reference (faculty, staff, administrator or peer mentor)
  • Be able to attend a 3-hour virtual meeting in August prior to Orientation Training
  • Be able to attend full day in-person Peer Mentor Training from August 18 to August 22, 2025 (schedule subject to change)
  • Be able to attend full day in-person Orientation from August 23 to August 24, 2025 (schedule subject to change)

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION (Description & Expectations)

  • Current degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate MCAD student (study-abroad and short-term exchange students not eligible)
  • Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Manage and accurately report funds for events
  • Plan to be at MCAD for the entire 2025-2026 academic year, excluding breaks (this means that you are NOT going abroad, on a domestic exchange or graduating in December)
  • Be self-motivated with a positive attitude
  • Be willing to learn and share information about the MCAD community, student life, and campus resources
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have a desire to help your peers succeed
  • Demonstrate leadership potential
  • Be interested in working with diverse populations

TIME COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION

  • $15.97/hr
  • 3 to 4 hours on average expected per week during the academic year
  • 40 hours expected for the week of the Fall 2025 Peer Mentor training and New Student Orientation
  • If you have work-study then the hours worked in this position will use all of your work-study funds over the year

WORK-STUDY AND CASUAL LABOR ELIGIBILITY

  • We hire students with, and without federal work-study
  • Payment will be made through federal work-study whenever possible
  • For students with federal work-study funds, this position will use all of your federal work-study funds
    • This means you cannot work two positions using federal work-study funds in the same year as a Peer Mentor; however, you can have another position if it is paid through casual labor funds
