Reflections on Election Day

Dear MCAD Community,

I hope you are all well. As we mark this important Election Day, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude and pride that MCAD, once again, serves as a polling location for our vibrant Whittier Neighborhood. This tradition exemplifies our commitment to civic responsibility and engagement, affirming that our campus is not just a center for creative exploration, but also a beacon for active community participation.

I would like to thank our dedicated staff who have worked tirelessly to host today’s event and ensure that our campus remains a welcoming and accessible space for our neighbors. Your efforts not only support democracy but also reinforce the values that make our community strong and resilient.

In moments like these, I am reminded of James Baldwin’s words from his 1962 essay The Creative Process: “The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through that vast forest, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

Regardless of the election’s outcome, we remain a community that stands firm in living out our values. We are guided by principles that emphasize creativity, respect, inclusivity, and a commitment to positive change. These principles are not just aspirations—they are the foundation of who we are and how we connect with the world around us.

Thank you for being part of this dynamic and resilient community. Let us continue to lead by example, illuminate the way forward, and contribute to a world that honors empathy, equity, and shared purpose.

With gratitude,
Sanjit
