Voting At MCAD! A How-to-guide for Students!

Polls Open at 7:00 a.m.! No Classes.
  1. What is voter registration?

Every voter must be registered before they can cast their vote - Registration connects you to your address and proves you are in the correct voting district. This is important because it lets you have a say in who represents your local neighborhood, who represents you in the state government, and who represents you in congress and in the White House.

Your registration also shows where you vote - You must vote in the district where you live. If you live in campus housing, your polling place is College Center. If you live in a different neighborhood you will have a different voting location. To find out where you need to vote enter your Minneapolis address here.

  2. How do I register to vote?

Minnesota has same-day voter registration. When you go to your polling place you register first and then you get your ballot.

Registering in person is a quick process, but you do need proof that you live where you live. This can be:

    • A MN state ID that has your photo and your current address (where you will be voting). Or an official photo ID (it could be out of state, expired, a passport, etc) AND an utility bill (paper or digital) with your name and current address, or proof of MCAD enrollment.
    • Someone who is already registered in your precinct who can vouch for your residence.

The full list of things you can use to register is here. If this is confusing, send me an email - I am happy to help!

*** IF YOU IN THE MCAD DORMS (you already got another email) *** :

Your polling place is at MCAD, but you will still need to register before you can vote. You will be able to use your Student ID as proof of identification. MCAD provides the city with a list of dorm residents, so your MCAD ID is good enough. IMPORTANT: What if your ID name is different from your ‘legal name’? MCAD provided a list of your legal name, so if your MCAD lists your preferred name or a dramatically different nickname, your student ID may not work. If this is the case, bring a back-up form of identification. A driver's license, ID, or passport will do, even if it is expired or from a different state.

  3. Cast your vote! Check out your ballot ahead of time.

You can see who is on your ballot here, and can research accordingly.

  4. Make a freaky lil' 'I voted' button - in the Library, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
