Absent//Present - Corrosive Memories by Kara Faye Gregory ’23, MFA

Exhibition:
Friday, April 17Sunday, June 21

Corrosive Memories is a conversation about memories and their inevitable deterioration over time. This installation features one of six monotypes from Gregory’s 2023 series Absent//Present, along with an original animated projection. Overlapping in space, the image and projection are copies or distortions of one another, offering a layered and ever-evolving experience.

Composed of complex layers, this work began as a relief print that has been photographed, animated, projected, photographed again, digitally printed, plexiglass monoprinted, and screenprinted to create the final large-scale monotype. Adding to its inherent complexity, the same woodcut print is projected onto and reflected in the monotype, altering the surface and the way the print is viewed.

The visual experience changes with the environment outside, constantly evolving with natural light. This fluctuation mirrors the ever-changing memories we carry within us.
