The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) is preparing to remove the Whittier Care Center (WCC) building located at 321 East 25th Street. In the coming weeks you will see activity in and around the site.
End of September: Installation of a construction fence which will close off all access to the parking lot adjacent to the WCC building, as well as the sidewalk on the north and east side of the building.
First week of October: Construction equipment will arrive on site to begin demolition of the WCC building which will take four to five weeks including the demolition of the building, removal of debris, and grading of the site. There will also be some required tree trimming around the building to safely complete the work.
First week of November: Well drilling rig will begin to drill a geothermal test well on the north side of the parking lot. This process will take about three weeks and requires that the parking lane on the south end of 25th Street be closed, along with the sidewalk.
The Mia currently anticipates the work will be completed in early December and the parking lot will be reopened at that time.
