Lab Guidelines

The MCAD Computer Support Services staff recommends that users comply with the following guidelines when working in the MCAD computer labs:

Try not to open files directly from the servers or save files directly to the servers, including your network home directory! This dramatically increases the chance that your files will corrupt and sets up the possibility for a system and/or server crash. Always copy the files you need from the server to the Temp_Storage hard drive partition and then open/work with the local copies.

Software Change Procedure

Request

Upgrades or new software / system requests must be initiated via the online Intranet form at least five business days in advance of the VP Technology Committee meeting in order to be reviewed. A department head should approve the request in advance. The VP Technology Committee meets bi-weekly on Thursdays at 1:00pm.

Evaluation

MCAD Information Technology Services (ITS) will first determine the kind of upgrade that has been requested:

Overview of MCAD's campus policies regarding network usage, privacy and copyright infringement

MCAD's computer network, workstations, servers and software are the property of MCAD and are provided to support the operation of the college. Use of network, equipment or services for personal business or profit; to attempt unauthorized access to user accounts, workstations, servers, networks or other attempts to disrupt services on MCAD's local network or other sites on the Internet is not permitted. The unauthorized distribution of copyright material, including unauthorized peer-to-peer file sharing, is also not permitted.

Network Cellular Extender Policy

Network Cellular Extenders are a class of devices sold by mobile network providers to resolve cellular coverage issues by intercepting and re-routing wireless telephone calls over the Internet. As a security measure, these devices only work with cell-phones that have been deliberately associated to the device. Cell phones that aren't explicitly associated to the device are not able to make calls except for 911 calls.

ITS Support Levels Overview

Overview

Information Technology Services (ITS) is committed to enabling MCAD through technologies and systems. ITS will continue to assist in areas outside the scope of our responsibilities as time allows and is deemed prudent. Additionally, ITS devotes approximately 15% of our development hours to new/expanded institutional initiatives. These projects are coordinated and prioritized school-wide by the VP Technology Committee.

ITS Escalation Policy

Overview

1. Outages can be expensive and disruptive. It is also expensive and disruptive for Information Technology Services (ITS) to respond during non-business hours unless the matter is an emergency or critical troubleshooting. The following guidelines will help ensure Technology related issues are handled with maximum efficiency during non-business hours for Vendor Supported Resources.

Graylock Passwords

The Graylock Active Directory Domain utilizes Microsoft technologies. These technologies are among the most actively attacked and compromised. The Graylock Domain protects the college's most sensitive and important data. Strong and secure passwords are along the frontline in preventing unauthorized use and abuse.

Graylock Domain passwords have a few restrictions placed upon them:

Access Control Policy

Scope

This policy governs which personnel are authorized to access constituent information and the system components that such data resides in. All personnel of Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) must comply with this policy. Demonstrated competence in the requirements of this policy is an important part of every employee’s responsibilities. Non-employee users are covered in a separate policy. Note that financial and confidential student data are also covered via supplemental guidelines.
