Exhibition and Studio Services

Exhibition and Studio Services (ESS, formerly Academic Services) oversees the reservation, use, and preparation of over 120 exhibition and critique spaces throughout the College, and monitors the proper installation of artwork in these spaces. We provide installation training and information to students and faculty about paint, materials, space, lighting, and tools. In addition, ESS is responsible for student studio assignment and usage, Intranet room reservations, setup and maintenance of the Drawing and Painting studios, and coordination of fine art figure model faculty requests for undergraduate and continuing education classes, as well as drawing co-ops.

Our department also coordinates the installation of artwork for a yearly calendar of special exhibitions and events - Junior Reviews, MFA Mid-Program and Thesis Exhibitions, Commencement Exhibition, the MCAD Art Sale, and Art Auction.

To reserve an exhibition or critique space on campus, please speak to our Office and Studio Coordinator in person at our office in Room 133, or reach out by email to We offer exhibition space on a first-come basis, and recommend scheduling in advance as much as possible.

For other space reservations, such as room or collaborative space reservations, please see the section on Room Reservations for Events and Classes, below.

Our Exhibition Guidelines, found below under Exhibitions, are a great resource covering the specifics of exhibition and installation guidelines. For additional information or questions regarding installation, email, or stop by our office.

We offer in-person assistance with art installation via appointment. These appointments are necessary if you are installing media equipment from the Media Center. To make an appointment with our Exhibitions Services Technician, please email with details about your installation, including when and where you will need assistance. Though we are sometimes available for walk-ins, we can not guarantee availability. If you have a site-specific installation planned, or need advice on how to install your work, please contact us well ahead of time!

For installations outside of our designated exhibition spaces, on the MCAD campus grounds or in non-exhibition locations, we will need to evaluate and approve your proposed installation. Please fill out the MCAD Grounds / Personal Proposal Form to initiate this process.

If you would like an individual studio space for the year, please fill out the studio application form below under the Student Studio Space tab. The application form for the following academic year is only available during the Spring Semester (March - May) and is open to any student who meets our studio eligibility criteria. If you miss the application deadline, you can email us to be placed on our waitlist.

If you are a student transferring from another institution in the Spring semester, email us to determine your eligibility. If you meet our studio criteria, you will be placed at the top of our waitlist and assigned a studio if one becomes available.

Reservable studio space for all students is also available by the hour through Places and Spaces under Studio 224.

The Room Reservation Form, found on the MCAD Intranet under the Course/Room Schedule, is used to reserve classrooms and auditoriums for classes and events. Please note that Hylfex Rooms (Main 150 - Auditorium, Main 410 - Classroom & Main 414 Classroom) are reservable for the Admissions, Advancement, and Academic Affairs Offices only.

Collaborative Spaces with no technnology or AV Support (Conference Spaces, the Print Critique Area, and the Screening Room) are found on Places and Spaces under Collaborative Spaces, and can be reserved directly there.

For further reference, see our Room Reservation QuickStart Guide, below. Please make sure to submit room reservation requests at least one week ahead, and contact us by email at or by phone at 612-874-3748 if you need additional assistance.
