When you receive a MacBook Pro as a new student through the MCAD Laptop Initiative, you own it just as if you bought it from the Apple Store, and by default, comes with a 1 year AppleCare warranty. This warranty covers parts failure but not accidental damage - so you can have it repaired for free if it spontaneously stops working or has an issue you didn't cause, but you'll have to pay for the repair if you drop it, spill something on it, etc.
In the first 60 days after you receive your laptop, you have the option of purchasing the 3-year extended warranty, which is called AppleCare+. In order to purchase AppleCare+ for your laptop, you need to call Apple Support at 800-275-2273 rather than doing it on the website.
This is optional, but we recommend it to protect your investment. AppleCare+ covers parts failure for 3 years after your date of purchase. Unlike the default warranty, AppleCare+ also covers up to 2 instances of accidental damage, with a fee of $99 for display/external enclosure damage or $299 for other accidental damage. It does not cover loss or theft; for this, consider adding it to your insurance. If the 60 day period has passed, you can still get in touch with Apple and see if they’ll let you purchase it.
You’ll be asked for the serial number of your laptop, which can be found on the bottom of your laptop or by going to the Apple menu in the upper left corner > About This Mac. They will ask if you have an Apple ID. It’s okay if you don’t. You may also be asked for the purchase date of your laptop. Let them know the date you received it and that you got it through your college. If you have any trouble verifying your purchase date, please reach out to email@example.com.
Ask about the student discount, which should significantly lower the price of AppleCare+.
